The City of Chesapeake Waste Management Division provides comprehensive waste collection services to over 72,000 residences, collecting more than 100,000 tons of refuse annually: COLLECTION SERVICES: - Garbage: Weekly automated collection (city-provided containers) - Bagged Yard Waste: Weekly collection (clear 35-gallon plastic bags) - Non-Bagged Yard Waste: On-demand bulk collection (must schedule) - Bulk Items: On-demand collection (limited to 12 per year, must schedule) - Recycling: Drop-off only at 8 convenient locations (no curbside) COLLECTION SCHEDULE: Collection days are determined by your specific address. To find your collection day: - Interactive Map: https://chesva.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=ce7db79f3987417db7702d1fc41b637e - Phone: 757-382-2489 (757-382-CITY) - Online: https://www.cityofchesapeake.net/1068/Waste-Management-Division CONTAINER PLACEMENT RULES: - Place containers as close as possible to curb or roadside by 7:00 AM on collection day - Containers can be placed no earlier than 24 hours prior to 7:00 AM the day of collection - Maintain at least 3 feet clearance from mailboxes, parked cars, other bins, and obstacles - After collection, containers must be removed within 24 hours after 7:00 AM collection time - Store containers in carport, enclosed building, or behind the nearest portion of residence - For townhomes without city containers: Maximum 4 standard 35-gallon containers (not exceeding 60 pounds) or 4 35-gallon plastic bags per dwelling unit BAGGED YARD WASTE COLLECTION: - Use CLEAR 35-gallon plastic bags ONLY - Place at curb on regular garbage day (no advance request needed) - Limit: 30 bags per week (50 bags in November and December) - Each bag must not exceed 25 pounds - Accepted: Leaves, pine straw, grass clippings - DO NOT INCLUDE: Dirt, rock, sod, soil, clay, compacted earth, or mulch - Bags containing prohibited heavy materials will NOT be collected NON-BAGGED YARD WASTE (Bulk Request Required): - Tree limbs, branches, bushes, shrubbery require bulk waste request - Call 757-382-CITY to schedule - Maximum size: 6 feet long, 6 inches diameter - NOT ALLOWED: Tree trunks/logs/stumps exceeding size limits - NOT ALLOWED: Contractor-removed debris (contractors must remove their own debris) - Place at curb no earlier than three days prior to normal collection day BULK WASTE COLLECTION: - Limited to 12 bulk collections per calendar year - Must schedule BEFORE your normal collection day - Schedule by: Phone (757-382-CITY), Online Service Request, or Chesapeake Service Request App - Place items at curb no earlier than three days before collection day - Accepted: Furniture, mattresses, appliances, carpets, exercise equipment, cabinets, etc. - NOT ACCEPTED: Tires, construction debris, vehicle parts, hazardous waste, contractor debris CHRISTMAS TREE DISPOSAL: - FREE collection beginning right after Christmas - Place live tree at curb on regular collection day (no bulk request needed) - Remove all ornaments, lights, tinsel, and stand - Trees collected through January PROHIBITED IN REGULAR TRASH: - Tires - Construction debris and building materials - Yard waste (must be bagged or use bulk collection) - Soil, rocks, ashes, plaster - Automobile batteries and vehicle parts - Hazardous waste (chemicals, toxins, flammable materials) - Paint cans (take to HHW facility) - Rechargeable batteries (take to HHW facility or recycling drop-off) - Glass (take to recycling drop-off - NOT accepted in city recycling) RECYCLING DROP-OFF SYSTEM: Chesapeake discontinued curbside recycling in 2023.
