Holiday Schedule

Portland garbage collection operates on all holidays EXCEPT Christmas Day (December 25) and New Year's Day (January 1). If your regular collection day falls on or after Christmas or New Year's Day, collection is delayed ONE DAY for the remainder of that week (Monday becomes Tuesday, Tuesday becomes Wednesday, etc., ending with Friday collection on Saturday). Collection continues as normal on all other holidays including Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Veterans Day, and other federal holidays. Place carts at curb by 6:00 AM on collection day. Check with your specific hauler or visit portland.gov/bps/garbage-recycling for holiday week confirmation. Metro transfer stations closed Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day.

Important Information

Portland operates under a FRANCHISED HAULER SYSTEM where different companies serve specific geographic areas. Major haulers include WM (Waste Management), Portland Disposal & Recycling, Arrow Sanitary Service, Heiberg Garbage & Recycling, Walker Garbage Service, and City Sanitary. To find your assigned hauler and collection schedule, visit portland.gov/bps/garbage-recycling/home-recycling/find-my-hauler or call the Garbage and Recycling Hotline at 503-823-7202. COLLECTION SCHEDULE: Garbage collected EVERY OTHER WEEK, while recycling and compost are collected WEEKLY on the same day. All rates are set annually by the City of Portland (effective July 1). Weekly recycling (blue cart), glass recycling (yellow bin), and compost (green cart) are ALL INCLUDED in the base garbage rate at no additional charge. Place carts at curbside by 6:00 AM on collection day with handles facing street. Keep carts at least 3 feet apart from each other and obstacles. Oregon Metro operates regional household hazardous waste facilities and transfer stations serving Portland residents (free for household hazardous waste, limit 35 gallons per visit). Electronics recycling is available through Oregon E-Cycles program at no cost - it is ILLEGAL to dispose of TVs, computers, laptops, or monitors in garbage. For questions: Garbage & Recycling Hotline 503-823-7202 (M-F 8:30 AM - 5 PM) or wasteinfo@portlandoregon.gov. Metro Recycling Information: 503-234-3000.
