Holiday Schedule

Jersey City observes major holidays with modified or no collection service. When a holiday falls on a scheduled collection day, collection may be delayed one day or suspended for that week. Major holidays affecting collection include: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. Residents should check with the Department of Public Works at (201) 547-4400 or monitor city announcements for specific holiday schedules. There are no makeup collections for missed pickups due to holidays in some cases - service resumes on the next regularly scheduled collection day.

Important Information

Jersey City Department of Public Works Division of Sanitation serves approximately 292,449 residents across 21.13 square miles. The city is divided into 6 collection zones with twice-weekly trash collection and once-weekly recycling collection. Collection contractor is Regional Industries, which maintains the current garbage collection schedule with three primary collection day combinations: Monday/Thursday, Tuesday/Friday, and Wednesday/Saturday. Residents can find their specific collection schedule by visiting the Jersey City Garbage Collection Map at data.jerseycitynj.gov/explore/dataset/garbage-collection-map or by calling the Department of Public Works at (201) 547-4400. Place all trash, recycling, and bulk items at the curb no earlier than 7:00 PM and no later than 10:00 PM the night before your scheduled collection day. Jersey City has six political wards: Ward A (Greenville), Ward B (West Side), Ward C (Journal Square), Ward D (The Heights), Ward E (Downtown), and Ward F (Bergen-Lafayette). However, sanitation collection zones do not strictly follow ward boundaries and are organized by geographic areas for operational efficiency. Sanitation inspectors patrol all six wards daily to ensure compliance with city ordinances.
