Reno uses single-stream recycling - all recyclables go together in one blue cart, no sorting required. Items must be empty, clean, and dry. Rinse containers to remove food residue. Do NOT bag recyclables - place items loosely in the cart. Flatten cardboard boxes to save space. Place carts at curbside with wheels against the curb by 6:00 AM on collection day, at least 3 feet from parked cars, mailboxes, and other obstacles. Lids should be closed. Do not overfill the cart. WM only accepts plastics by SHAPE (bottles, jugs, jars, and tubs), not by recycling number. When in doubt, throw it out. Contamination reduces recycling effectiveness. For large amounts of cardboard, take to the Cardboard Drop-Off at 1100 E. Commercial Row (Monday-Friday: 7:30 AM - 3:00 PM) or use transfer station trips.

Holiday Schedule

Waste Management observes major holidays with adjusted collection schedules. When a holiday falls on a weekday, trash and recycling collection continues as normal - WM provides service on all holidays in Reno. This is a key advantage for Reno residents. However, transfer stations and landfills have modified hours on holidays. HERO Environmental and transfer facilities are typically closed on: New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. Lockwood Landfill also closes for MLK Day and Nevada Day. For holiday schedules, check the WM website or call 775-329-8822. In rare cases of severe weather or equipment issues, collection may be delayed by one day.

Important Information

Waste Management (WM) of Northern Nevada provides comprehensive waste collection services to the City of Reno and surrounding unincorporated areas of Washoe County under an exclusive franchise agreement. WM is the only authorized company to handle household garbage and recycling services in Reno, Sparks, and Washoe County. The service area includes over 100,000 residential customers across the greater Reno-Sparks metropolitan area. Reno uses a 6-zone collection system with trash collected Monday through Saturday and recycling collected bi-weekly (every other week) on the same day as trash. Collection begins as early as 6:00 AM, so all containers must be placed at the curb by that time. Place carts with wheels against the curb, at least 3 feet from parked cars, mailboxes, and other obstacles. Carts should not overfill - lids must close completely. Trash must be bagged before placing in cart. Only items inside the provided carts will be collected during regular service. For items that don't fit in your cart, use the 20 annual excess waste stickers provided, or take advantage of 4 free transfer station trips per year. To find your specific collection day, use the WM address lookup tool at wm.com or call 775-329-8822. Manage your account through the My WM online portal or mobile app. Report missed pickups within 24 hours. The local WM customer desk is located at 100 Vassar Street, Reno, NV 89502 (open Monday-Friday: 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM). For after-hours emergencies, call the main customer service line. WM operates state-of-the-art transfer stations and works with regional recycling facilities to process materials collected from Reno residents.
