Holiday Schedule

Indianapolis observes major holidays with delayed collection schedules. When a holiday falls on your collection day, trash pickup will be delayed by one day for that week. For example, if Monday is a holiday, Monday collection moves to Tuesday, Tuesday moves to Wednesday, etc. Observed holidays typically include: New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. Heavy trash collection also shifts when holidays affect the schedule. Check with your service provider or visit indy.gov for specific holiday schedule updates.

Important Information

Indianapolis operates with 11 solid waste districts across Marion County. The Department of Public Works (DPW) and AFSCME Local #725 manage 4 districts (primarily downtown and older neighborhoods), while private contractors service the remaining 7 districts. Starting January 1, 2026, Lakeshore Recycling Systems (LRS) will take over most residential collection from Waste Management and Republic Services in 7 districts. New gray trash carts began rolling out in October 2025 for affected residents. Universal curbside recycling for all Indianapolis residents is coming in 2028, with an estimated cost of $3.87 per unit per month. To find your specific collection day, visit indy.gov/activity/trash-pickup and enter your address. Collection begins at 7:00 AM - place carts at curb by 7:00 AM on collection day. Indianapolis serves approximately 600,000+ households. The city's solid waste system is part of the consolidated Indianapolis-Marion County government under the Unigov structure.
