Nearly 20% of items placed in blue carts cannot be recycled and must be sorted out at the city facility, so please follow the accepted items list carefully. All recyclables are processed at the city Materials Recovery Facility. Place carts at curb by 6:00 PM the evening before your collection day.

Holiday Schedule

Refuse collection workers will NOT collect refuse, bulky items, recyclables, or green waste on Christmas Day (December 25) and New Year's Day (January 1). Collection scheduled for these days will be delayed. For all other federal and state holidays, collection typically continues on regular schedule. Check the city website or call 808-768-3200 for specific holiday schedule changes. The 2024-2025 holiday schedule shows no collection on Wednesday, December 25, 2024 (Christmas Day) and Wednesday, January 1, 2025 (New Year's Day).

Important Information

The City and County of Honolulu Department of Environmental Services serves approximately 160,000 single-family homes with automated three-cart curbside collection, and an additional 20,000 homes with manual refuse-only collection. The department performs about 200,000 residential pickups per week across the entire island of Oahu. Honolulu is unique as the only Hawaii county providing free residential refuse collection funded through property taxes. The three-cart system includes: Gray cart (trash collected weekly), Blue cart (recyclables collected every 2 weeks), and Green cart (yard waste collected every 2 weeks, alternating with blue cart). All residents must use opala.hnl.info to look up their specific collection schedule by address, as routes are optimized by location. Collection schedules follow Monday/Thursday, Tuesday/Friday, or Wednesday/Saturday patterns. Place all carts at curb by 6:00 PM the evening before collection day. Allow 5 feet clearance from obstructions and keep cart handles facing away from street. From October 1, 2025 to January 31, 2026, no gray cart monitoring or additional green/blue cart requests will be accepted; resume February 1, 2026. Report illegal dumping to 808-768-3203 or illegaldumping@honolulu.gov.
