Santa Ana uses a three-cart system where residents separate materials into: 1) recyclables cart (blue/gray), 2) organics cart (green), and 3) trash cart (black). Keep all recyclables free of food and liquid. Never put recyclables in containers or bags - place items loose in the cart. Flatten cardboard to save space. Plastic bottles and jugs should have lids on. Rinse containers to remove food residue. Place carts at the curb with handles facing your home, no earlier than 4 PM the day prior to collection. Carts should be 3 feet apart and away from obstacles like cars, mailboxes, and utility poles. For special collection of batteries, fluorescent bulbs, and electronic devices, call Republic Services at 657-467-6220 for an appointment.

Holiday Schedule

When the following holidays are observed on a weekday, trash, recycling, and organics collections for the remainder of the week will be delayed ONE DAY: New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. Place carts at the curb with handles facing your home, no earlier than 4:00 PM the day prior to collection. Carts should be 3 feet apart and away from obstacles. The Orange County Household Hazardous Waste Collection Centers are closed on major holidays and during rainy weather. For holiday schedule questions or missed collections, contact Republic Services at 657-467-6220. Street sweeping may also be affected by holidays - ensure carts are not blocking street sweeping routes.

Important Information

The City of Santa Ana has contracted with Republic Services as the exclusive trash and recycling hauler for residential and commercial waste collection. Santa Ana serves approximately 310,000+ residents across 65 distinct neighborhoods. All solid waste, recyclables, and organics/yard waste are collected weekly on the same day using a three-cart system. Collection days vary by street and zone - use the online map at www.santa-ana.org/trash-and-recycling-pick-up-schedule to find your specific collection day. Santa Ana follows California SB 1383 organic waste recycling mandates, requiring mandatory separation of food scraps and yard waste from trash. Residents must use the three-cart system: recyclables (blue/gray cart), organics (green cart), and trash (black cart). Violations of waste sorting requirements may result in fines. Santa Ana Clean City Initiatives include abandoned item collection, litter cleanup, 250 public trash containers serviced citywide, sidewalk cleaning and power washing, and cleaning services for illegal dumping hotspots. The city is committed to reducing organic waste sent to landfills by 75% and recovering 20% of edible food by 2025.
